It’s a trip well worth taking whilst in the area.
Wagonga Inlet is a drowned river valley located on the south coast of NSW near the township of Narooma. The inlet estuary extends approximately 9 km upstream from the ocean entrance and has a catchment area of 84 km2 of predominantly steep, densely timbered terrain, the majority of which lies within the Bodalla State Forest. The major tributaries of Wagonga Inlet are Billa Bilba Creek and Burrimbidgee (Rats Head) Creek to the north-west and Punkally Creek to the south.
The combination of these factors means the water in the inlet is not much different from seawater, resulting in a wide range and abundance of marine life. "Fifty species of fish have been recorded in Wagonga Inlet and for six of these, Wagonga Inlet was the only location they were found in the Eurobodalla Shire,"
"Bird life is also prolific, with 197 species recorded in the inlet area, including six sea eagle pairs that have produced juveniles over the last four years.
Narooma is arguably the most picturesque town on the South Coast because of the inlet and its unspoilt village atmosphere is drawing growing numbers of visitors. The most popular activities reflect this, with walking, relaxing, picnics, swimming and fishing listed by people as a preferred activity.
